BRIAN P. TIMMONS, DME
Dr. Brian P. Timmons builds high-performing music education programs and develops the teachers who lead them, bridging K-12 and higher education across a 25-year career in music education.
As District Music Coordinator for Bergenfield Public Schools, he provides strategic leadership for a comprehensive K-12 music program serving approximately 3,800 students across 7 schools and a team of 14 music educators. This work has helped sustain and build on an already nationally recognized district program, earning Bergenfield 19 consecutive NAMM Foundation “Best Community for Music Education” designations. As Director of Bands at Bergenfield High School, he directs the Honors Wind Ensemble and Marching Band and teaches AP Music Theory. Ensembles under his direction have earned consistent Superior ratings and performed at NJPAC, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall, most recently in March 2024. His students have also appeared in nationally televised productions including the Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show, HBO’s Game of Thrones, NBC’s Today Show, Fox Sports’ First Things First, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as the feature films Tower Heist and The Bounty Hunter.
That same commitment to strong programs and strong teaching carries into his work beyond Bergenfield. As Band Director at Seton Hall University, he leads the university band for NCAA Division I basketball, growing the ensemble from 43 to 70 musicians in his first season. As Adjunct Professor of Music at William Paterson University, he teaches courses in music pedagogy and brass methods. As a clinical educator, he supervises and coaches pre-service band directors across three New Jersey universities, drawing on his doctoral research into conducting mentorship.
In 2024, Dr. Timmons founded SoundCheck Educational Consulting, LLC, bringing that same expertise directly to school districts across the NY/NJ metropolitan area. He also provides specialized Praxis Music Content Knowledge (5113) exam preparation for aspiring music educators pursuing state licensure.
Dr. Timmons received his Doctor of Music Education from Liberty University, where his research focused on conductor mentoring. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from William Paterson University, where he studied conducting and trumpet with Dr. J. Craig Davis, and a Master of Arts in Wind Conducting from Hofstra University, where he studied with Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft.
His guest conducting credits include the Rockland County Senior All-County High School Honor Band (2025), the Ridgewood Concert Band, the William Paterson University Wind Ensemble and Summer Honors Band, the North Jersey Concert Band, the MEBCI Bergen County High School and Middle School Honor Bands, the Imperial Brass, the Gramercy Brass Staff Band, the Teaneck Community Band, and the New Jersey Choral Society.
He serves as President of the North Jersey Band Festival and previously served as President of the Music Educators of Bergen County, Inc. (2010–2012), where he continues to serve as Treasurer. In 2013, he was named a Yale University Distinguished Music Educator and represented New Jersey at Yale’s Symposium on Music in Schools. In 2018, he was named the New Jersey representative for School Band and Orchestra Magazine’s 50 Directors Who Make a Difference. He has served on the faculty of the John Philip Sousa National High School Honor Band at every biennial convening since 2022.
